THROWS CAMPS

Shot Put (glide & spin) & Discus Throw

The camps are designed to give each athlete an informative introduction into the throwing events. All throws are welcomed whether beginners, intermediate, or advanced athletes, each will received instruction appropriate to their current abilities. The focus of the camp is to increase the athletes understanding of their events, bringing them to a new level of technical proficiency by learning principles that progress physical conditioning enabling greater distances thrown.

The camp is about giving each athlete an enjoyable experience by mixing hard work with fun and creating a positive competitive environment.

The syllabus for the camp focuses on;

• Demonstrations by national standard throwers
• Basic progressions for technical development
• Drills for skill acquisition and learning
• Fitness and conditioning for the events
• Strength development, both general and specific
• Competition strategies, and how to development a warm up
• A competition for ALL events, judged by USATF qualified officials

This camp will focus on the shot put (glide & spin), and the discus throw, additionally each athlete will be able to receive an introduction into the hammer, weight throw and javelin throw, this is at the athletes discretion.

The Hammer & Weight Throw

The hammer and weight throw are exciting events to watch and to compete in, unfortunately in Florida and many other states in the USA they are not contested in the high schools meet programs. This makes it difficult for almost all the shot and discus throwers going on to participate in collage as these events are contested in open, conference and NCAA/NAIA national championships. The throws coaches in college/university programs introduce the events in the athlete’s freshman year, but because of the specific technical and physical requirements needed to throw the implements effectively, very few but the highly talented athletes contribute in these events until their junior and senior years.

In summery, it makes sense to learn these events whilst in high school as it could make a difference in a college/universities track programs decision in recruiting, and offering a scholarship with good financial aid. These events are also popular with master’s athletes, and offer the athlete additional challenges and more competition opportunities.

The Javelin Throw

The javelin throw is unlike the other throwing events in the throwing family. This event requires speed/strength as opposed to gross strength/power, and a greater body mass for the heavy throwing events. The javelin also is a running based event that depends on the athlete generating high momentum from the runway approach, and conversion of energy into the spear from limb range, and a very fast arm at delivery. The programs I set for the javelin are highly demanding of the athlete and are  varied, for example:

• Technical drills
• Running drills
• Javelin carry drills
• Flexibility/Mobility
• Weighted balls/Medicine ball throwing
• Specialized lifting program
• Sprinting and jumping

The javelin is an exciting event to compete in, and my training program also offers regular opportunities for competition, as with the weight and hammer throws, there are limited chances to compete in this event in Florida.

Throws Clinics

The need as an athlete, or coach to stay updated with current training theory is an absolute, also the opportunity to learn new skills, train with other athletes and most importantly, gain an edge over your competitors are all good reasons to attend clinics and camps.

The throws clinics I will run will be held at weekends, holiday periods and also in the evenings for local coaches and athletes.

The clinics will be practical and very interactive for the coach and athletes, also will be staffed by qualified USATF coaches and assisted by College and National standard athletes.

• Shot Put - Glide & Rotation
• Discus Throw
• Javelin
• Hammer & Weight Throw

Please contact  if you have an interest in attending throwscoachflorida.com clinics.
